Construction lawyer joins Battens’ Dispute Resolution Team

A HIGH-PROFILE lawyer involved in such diverse cases as the Diana Memorial Fountain in London to oil-rig platforms in the Falklands has joined Battens Solicitors.

Consultant Philip Burbidge, 48, is responsible for the Construction Team within the firm’s dispute resolution department.

Philip, an experienced litigation solicitor, represents large corporate bodies as well as advising smaller business and individuals.

Representing both employers and contractors he is experienced in high value and complex court actions, arbitrations and the quick-fire adjudication procedure designed for construction industry disputes.

He acts on disputes over people extending or converting their homes, civil engineering disputes, complex mechanical and electrical engineering cases through to new housing development defect problems and facilities contracts.

Philip is well versed in final account, loss and expense, delay and extension of time and variations claims as well as traditional defect problems.

He advises on the drafting and amending of all forms of building contracts and fields a wealth of experience in the preparation and negotiation of appointments and warranties for architects, surveyors, engineers and others involved in the construction sector.

Philip works with clients on prevention as much as provocation of conflict, seeking early and cost effective results. As such he offers considerable experience of mediation and conciliation.

Philip and his team will be launching an offer for Somerset and Dorset contractors of a flat fee review of their terms to advise on best protection in the current economic climate.

He said: ‘Although there will be disagreements, prevention is better than cure and contractors and sub-contractors should strive to minimise their risk as much as possible before commencing works.’

Prior to joining Battens Philip practised in Bristol having been admitted in 1995 and specialised from then through to partnership in the construction arena.

Philip is married with two children. He can be contacted at p.burbidge@battens.co.uk / 01935 846000
